Where the Grasses Follow the Wind

Crafted by CEDAR Y SAND in our East Hampton studio, Windward brings together hand-gathered and pressed botanicals with the fluid movement of traditional Suminagashi. Each piece begins with 140 lb watercolor paper, individually marbled by hand as ink floats across water, creating an organic pattern that can never be repeated.

Over this one-of-a-kind ground, tall grasses, feathery seed heads, and delicate field botanicals gathered in East Hampton are individually pressed, selected, and composed by hand. In Windward, the natural sweep of the grasses creates a sense of movement, as though shaped by the coastal winds that pass through the surrounding dunes and open fields.

Gathered, Pressed & Composed by Hand

Part of the Gathered Impressions series within our Suminagashi Impressions collection, each work explores the meeting of two fleeting processes: the spontaneous movement of marbled ink and the seasonal character of gathered flora.

Windward celebrates the expressive forms of wild grasses. Tall, plume-like stems in muted bronze, soft gold, and weathered green rise against a warm ivory Suminagashi ground. Their fine textures and gently shifting silhouettes echo the flowing currents of marbled ink beneath them, creating a composition that feels both grounded and in motion.

Every botanical element was gathered and pressed by hand in East Hampton, NY. Variations in color, form, and texture are inherent to the natural materials, while the Suminagashi beneath them exists only once. The finished work is an original, one-of-one composition.

FAQ

Q: What makes Windward one of a kind?

A: Windward is an original composition of wild grasses, seed heads, and field botanicals hand-gathered in East Hampton, NY. Each element is individually pressed and thoughtfully arranged over hand-marbled Suminagashi watercolor paper. The natural variations of the grasses and the spontaneous patterns of floating ink make the finished artwork entirely singular.
