A Study in Form & Texture

Handcrafted by CEDAR Y SAND in our East Hampton studio, Wheat captures the sculptural beauty of a familiar field form. Each notecard begins with hand-marbled Suminagashi paper—where ink drifts across water to create a one-of-a-kind composition of soft, flowing movement.

Layered atop this surface, individual paper elements are cut, shaped, and assembled by hand to form slender leaves and dimensional heads of wheat. Gentle sculpting lifts portions of the composition from the page, creating a subtle interplay of texture, shadow, and form.

A Composition of Wheat & Sand

Rendered in warm, tonal neutrals against a quiet Suminagashi ground, the design draws inspiration from wheat fields, dune grasses, and the softened palette of late summer. Fine paper details build each wheat head piece by piece, transforming a simple botanical form into a small study in craftsmanship.

While the composition remains true to the wheat form, each notecard is entirely unique—guided by the natural variation of the marbled background and the hand-cut, hand-sculpted placement of each element.

No two are ever exactly alike.

FAQ

Q: How is the Wheat design created?
A: Each Wheat notecard is individually handcrafted in our East Hampton studio. The botanical elements are cut from paper, shaped and gently sculpted by hand, then layered over an original Suminagashi marbled background. The dimensional construction creates subtle variations in texture, form, and shadow from card to card.

Q: Is each Wheat notecard exactly the same?
A: No. Every Suminagashi background is created individually through the traditional process of floating ink on water, so no two marbled patterns are identical. The wheat elements are also cut, shaped, and assembled by hand, making each notecard a one-of-a-kind variation of the original composition.
