This Shibu Uchiwa fan is handcrafted by Kurikawa Shoten, the last remaining workshop dedicated to the traditional Kutami fan craft in Kumamoto, Japan. Constructed from bamboo ribs and kakishibu-coated washi paper—Japanese paper brushed with fermented persimmon tannin—it provides natural insect resistance and allows the fan to develop a rich, earthy patina over time.
Favored by chefs across Japan and beyond, this fan is prized for its practical use in the kitchen—from cooling freshly cooked dishes to stoking and controlling heat over charcoal or open flames. Its generous surface creates a powerful breeze with minimal effort. Ideal for summer cooling, grilling, or gifting—it’s a tool that balances function, beauty, and heritage.
