Tide-Worn Ribbons in Motion
Collected from the shoreline at Louse Point in East Hampton, this seaweed specimen features jagged, salt-cured ribbons rising from a dense base. Their rich umber tones—both earthy and elemental—appear to sway gently, captured mid-motion as if still stirred by the retreating tide. The composition rests on a two-toned suminagashi marbled background, where pale neutrals and smoky blue-gray hues mirror the movement of water itself. Together, they create a scene that feels alive with rhythm, memory, and quiet coastal energy.
Where Nature Meets Artisan Technique
Each backdrop in our Pressed by the Sea series is made using suminagashi, the Japanese art of “floating ink.” This centuries-old marbling method allows fluid water patterns to form naturally, enhancing the movement and mood of the seaweed specimen. Carefully collected, pressed, and composed by hand, each artwork preserves not only form but the ephemeral beauty of the shoreline.

FAQ
FAQ
Q: What type of seaweed is featured in this artwork?
A: While we are not experts,
we think this might be a variety of Petalonia or Scytosiphon—soft, brown seaweeds known for their curling, ribbon-like blades. Its swaying shape pairs beautifully with the two-toned marbled background, almost as if it’s still drifting with the tide.
