Where Poetry Takes Root
Crafted by CEDAR Y SAND in our East Hampton studio, Poetry in Bloom brings together the quiet beauty of preserved botanicals, handmade plantable paper, and the centuries-old Japanese art of Suminagashi. Each notecard is a thoughtful expression of nature and artistry, designed to be treasured, shared, and eventually returned to the earth.
A delicate, hand-pressed botanical is nestled into discreet paper-cut slits on the front of each card, creating a naturally elegant composition without adhesives. Inside, a removable liner of hand-marbled Japanese Hosho paper reveals the fluid, one-of-a-kind patterns of Suminagashi, where ink floats upon water before being transferred to paper.
A Poetic Tradition, A Second Life
Among the earliest surviving examples of Suminagashi are marbled papers accompanying Japanese poetry dating to approximately 1118. Poetry in Bloom honors this historic connection between the written word and the art of marbled paper, while introducing a new botanical dimension.
The handmade notecard is embedded with a mixture of wildflower seeds that may include black-eyed Susan, mountain garland, baby's breath, spurred snapdragon, sweet William, bird's eye, and corn poppy. Once its message has been enjoyed, the card can be planted, offering the possibility of a colorful gathering of wildflowers. Simply remove the pressed botanical to preserve as a keepsake, gently peel away the marbled Hosho liner, and plant the seed paper in soil, where it may find a second life in bloom.
Particularly meaningful as a sympathy or remembrance card, Poetry in Bloom offers a gentle way to honor a loved one through the possibility of new growth. Equally suited to heartfelt notes, gratitude, encouragement, or simply keeping in touch, each card carries a sentiment that extends beyond the written word.
Gathered, Preserved & Made to Bloom
Part of the Suminagashi Springs collection, each notecard features a unique botanical arrangement, individually pressed and composed by hand. The Suminagashi liner varies in color and pattern, ensuring that no two cards are exactly alike.
