Green Currents, Caught in Stillness
Collected from the shoreline at Louse Point in Springs, NY, Green Drift features Ulva lactuca—commonly known as sea lettuce—rendered in soft, translucent greens. Its broad, undulating forms appear to fold and drift, like ribbons suspended in shallow tide pools. The layered composition captures both lightness and movement, as if the seaweed is still gently carried by water.
Set against a hand-marbled suminagashi background, pale mineral tones and flowing lines echo the natural rhythm of coastal currents—creating a quiet dialogue between specimen and sea.
Where Nature Meets Artisan Technique
Each backdrop in our Pressed by the Sea series is created using suminagashi, the Japanese art of “floating ink.” This centuries-old marbling process allows organic patterns to form naturally on water before being transferred to paper. Paired with carefully foraged and pressed seaweed, each piece preserves not only the form of the specimen, but the fleeting essence of the shoreline itself.
Hand-collected, pressed, and composed in our East Hampton studio, every artwork is entirely one-of-a-kind.
