Green Motion from the Tidal Edge
Collected along the shoreline of Napeague State Park in East Hampton, this specimen of Ulva unfurls in ribbons of luminous green. Its elongated blades twist and drift like a submerged current, capturing the movement of water even in stillness. Pressed and preserved by hand, the sea lettuce rests upon a field of pale blue-gray and ivory suminagashi, where flowing ink patterns echo the rhythm of tide and tidepool.
Where Nature Meets Artisan Technique
Each backdrop in our Pressed by the Sea series is created using suminagashi, a centuries-old Japanese marbling technique whose name translates to "floating ink." Guided by water rather than repetition, every marbled sheet forms a unique composition. Locally gathered seaweeds are carefully pressed and arranged by hand, preserving the natural character of each specimen while pairing it with the quiet movement of marbled ink.
Mounted & Ready to Frame
This artwork is professionally matted to 12" x 16" with an image window of 8½" x 11½" in a vertical orientation. Gallery-Off white archival mat board allows the piece to fit any standard 12" x 16" frame. Each artwork is assembled by hand in our East Hampton studio and is one of a kind.
A Moment from the Shoreline
Part of the Suminagashi Impressions series within our Suminagashi Springs collection, Green Current reflects the vitality of spring and early summer along the East End shoreline. The vibrant green blades seem suspended between sea and air, offering a quiet reminder of the movement and renewal found at the water's edge.
Pressed by the Sea
CEDAR Y SAND's Pressed by the Sea series pairs locally gathered seaweeds with artisan marbled papers, creating frameable compositions that celebrate both natural form and handmade process. Every piece is individually composed, matted, and ready to frame.
